So many of you have been asking about how to soothe and heal acne caused by wearing a mask. This type of acne is called acne mechanica. It is caused by friction, pressure, and heat from wearing masks. Here are some of my tips on how to manage it:
Try to avoid makeup under your mask or try to wear less layers or lighter makeup.
Apply a hydrating serum in the morning to keep your skin hydrated. Be sure this is something non-comedogenic. I recommend SkinBetter Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment and the Hydration Boosting Cream. These will help maintain moisture in the skin’s barrier.
Apply a very thin layer of vaseline or Aquaphor over the areas of the skin that are irritated from friction, including behind the ears or on the bridge of the nose. This helps to protect the skin and prevent friction, and contrary to common belief, vaseline and Aquaphor are not comedogenic and will not clog the pores, unlike coconut oil which should never be used on the face. (Unfortunately, nurses may not be able to use this tip as it can alter the efficacy of their mask)
When possible, remove your mask off throughout the day to let the skin breathe. Depending on length of your work shift it would be helpful to cleanse the skin using a gentle, soothing toner and reapply the Trio Moisturizer or the Hydration Boosting Cream. Do this at least once during your shift.
Maintaining an evening routine is important. Be sure to cleanse thoroughly each evening, being careful not to use abrasive/stripping products or techniques to further irritate the skin. Using a gentle cleanser, no scrubbing and avoid things like facial brushes. Our Oxygen Infusion Wash from SkinBetter is a gentle cleanser that helps to purify and refresh the skin.
If you are experiencing breakouts, use a cool compress in the evenings and one for two times throughout the day. A cool roller or an ice pack on inflamed acne helps soothe and calm irritated skin.
Wear a clean mask every day. Wash any cloth masks between uses and don’t reuse disposable masks
Use specialized skincare masksto help skin recover. We carry two masks that patients can purchase to help soothe and calm irritated, acned skin: HydraCalm helps restore moisture to dry, dehydrated skin and calm dry, irritated skin. The Soothing Clay Mask helps to soothe inflamed skin while absorbing excess sebum to reduce existing acne breakouts. Hope this helps everyone look and feel better!
